About Act Five:

Act Five is a discipleship community that offers an 8-month Christian Gap Year program (for 18-20 year olds) & Residency program (for 21-30 year olds) based out of a community home in Hamilton. This summer, the home will undergo significant renovations that will allow Act Five to continue to serve young adults in the years to come. 

Role Overview: 

The Renovations Assistant supports Act Five’s mission by ensuring that key indoor renovation projects at 75 Blake Street run smoothly throughout a summer of significant upgrades to the Act Five residence. Working closely with hired contractors, this role focuses on preparing spaces for renovation, assisting with manageable tasks, coordinating volunteer help, and ensuring clear communication among contractors, staff, and residents. The Renovations Assistant plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe, functional, and welcoming environment during an active construction season.

Hours of Work:

Full time (30 hours/week) for 16 weeks, beginning May 4, 2026, pending Canada Summer Job funding.

Key Responsibilities:

Renovation Preparation & Support

  • Prepare interior spaces for renovation (e.g., moving furniture, masking and drop sheets, clearing rooms, covering surfaces).
  • Assist contractors with basic, appropriate tasks such as site cleanup, material transport, demolition preparation, painting, and other light-duty labour as directed. More responsibility will be given depending on the employee’s skillset. 
  • Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas throughout renovation projects, including daily debris removal and dust control.
  • Monitor progress of renovation timelines and communicate updates to Act Five staff and residents.

Communication & Coordination

  • Serve as the primary day-to-day liaison between contractors and Act Five staff, ensuring information flows clearly and efficiently.
  • Coordinate and orient volunteers to assist with smaller projects (painting days, clean-up shifts, demolition, etc.).
  • Work with the Residence Manager to minimize disruption to summer tenants and ensure safety protocols are followed.
  • Property & Residence general support as is required and time permits.
  • Assist with general indoor upkeep as needed, especially in areas impacted by renovation work.
  • Support move-in and move-out tasks for summer tenants as required.
  • Help ensure the home remains welcoming and functional during construction (organizing temporary setups, posting notices, etc.).

Skills & Abilities: 

  • Employees must demonstrate an ability to work independently and be organized. 
  • Construction, contracting, property management, manual labour, or home maintenance experience is an asset.
  • Potential for mentorship opportunities with Act Five’s Property Manager as well as on-site contractors to develop relevant skills.
  • Strong communication skills are essential – including ability to use Google Calendar, manage to-do lists, send emails, and provide progress reports.
  • Access to a vehicle and tools are an asset. 

Education/Experience:

Minimum high school diploma and some level of previous experience in the area of property maintenance, repair, construction, or related field. 

Salary:

$24/hourly, pending Canada Summer Job funding. Residence at 75 Blake St at a reduced rate is available upon request.
