About Act Five:
Act Five is a discipleship community that offers an 8-month Christian Gap Year program (for 18-20 year olds) & Residency program (for 21-30 year olds) based out of a community home in Hamilton.
Role Overview:
The person in this role supports Act Five’s mission and vision to care for the land at 75 Blake Street. This involves regular maintenance of the Act Five home and property, and goes further to include upkeep of and significant investment in the pollinator gardens, vegetable gardens, and soil health of the property throughout the summer months. The Residence Caretaker maintains Act Five’s visual appeal in the neighbourhood and works to ensure a safe, welcoming environment for tenants and guests. They do this while increasing biodiversity and educational opportunities on the property for the good of Act Five’s presence and programs in the city.
Hours of Work:
Full time (30 hours/week) for 16 weeks, beginning May 4, 2026, pending Canada Summer Job funding.

Key Responsibilities
The following is all subject to adaptations based on extensive renovations happening on the Act Five property over the course of May-August 2026.
- Outdoor property upkeep of the Act Five Residence including but not limited to grass cutting, tidying sheds, maintaining gardens, and caring for patio and porches; and maintaining the cleanliness of the property.
- Building maintenance including but not limited to replacing light bulbs, fixing leaky taps, painting, and other small repairs.
- Follow weekly waste protocols, ensuring proper recycling and composting practices.
- Maintain the security of the Act Five residence by checking for locked doors and windows, lighting, and tracking resident vehicles.
- Report major home issues to the Property Manager (burst pipe, fire, broken windows/doors, etc.)
- Work with the Property Manager on larger repairs or projects to learn new skills and assist in their completion.
- Care for vegetable gardens, including preparation, sowing, weeding, watering, harvesting, and sharing produce with tenants.
- Encourage environmental awareness and sustainable practices among residents including, but not limited to gardening & harvesting education, recycling and composting practices, energy conservation in the home, and advocating for non-motorized transportation where possible.
- Learn to complete bed bug checks and implement Act Five’s bed bug prevention protocol.
- Assist with various home and neighbourhood initiatives in collaboration with the Residence Manager, such as community barbecues or neighbourhood clean-up days
- Participate in weekly ‘Spaghetti Wednesday’ meals at the Act Five residence, and commit to being an active member of the Act Five summer community.
Skills & Abilities:
- Employees must demonstrate an ability to work independently and be organized.
- Gardening, landscaping, property and home maintenance skills are an asset.
Education/Experience:
Minimum high school diploma and some level of previous experience in the area of property maintenance, repair, construction, landscaping, gardening, or related field. Prior experience with the Act Five program or residence is preferred.
Salary:
$20/hourly, pending Canada Summer Job funding. Residence at 75 Blake St at a reduced rate is available upon request.
